MAZEPPA — A young soldier who lost his life defending freedom during World War I has been memorialized by having a stretch of a Union County highway renamed in his honor.
House Bill 243 designates the portion of Johnson Mill Road, from the bridge over Buffalo Creek to the intersection of Colonel John Kelly Road, as the Sgt. Edward L. Shannon Memorial Highway. A dedication ceremony for the newly named highway was held Friday morning in Mazeppa.
