OSLO, Norway (AP) — Presi-
dent Mikhail S. Gorbachev won
the 1M0 Nobel Peace Prise
today for his decisive role in the
dramatic rapprochement
between East and West — lead-
ership that helped end the Cold
War, free the East bloc and slow
the arms race.
In awarding the 59-year-old
Soviet loader the 8700,000
prise, the Norwegian Nobel
Committee also cited him for
allowing greater openness in
his homeland.
Gorbachev said the prise, the
first to a superpower chief
executive since President
Woodrow Wilson won in 1818,
recognised the success of pere-
stroika — his government's
reform policies.
"Words fall one at such
moments. I am moved," the offi-
cial Soviet news agency Tass
quoted Gorbachov as saying.

Iraq today vowed to crush any
aggression by the United States
and its allies. The sharply
worded statement was appa-
rently intended to counter sug-
gestions that Saddam Hussein
was becoming flexible about
withdrawing from Kuwait
Also today, U.S. Defense Sec-
retary Richard Cheney said the
United States is prepared to
keep troops in Saudi Arabia for
years. “We’re there as long as
the Saudis want us... as long as
it takes to get the job done. And
no one should underestimate
our staying power," Cheney
said in London.
