CARLSBAD — Elsie M. Knight, 99, diedFriday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Oceanside.

Born Feb. 5, 1902, in Grand Island, Neb., she lived in Carlsbad forthree years. She was a volunteer at the YMCA Armed Services at CampPendleton.

Mrs. Knight was preceded in death by her husband, George Knight, in1960. She is survived by her brother Coral Dubry of Bonneterre,Mo.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 13, at EternalHills Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m.Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel with intermentfollowing at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Rancho Bernardo — Michael Joseph Raine,30, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, of injuries sustained in a trafficaccident.

Born July 28, 1970, in Palm Springs, he lived in Rancho Bernardofor 12 years. He was an inventory manager for Dixieline Lumber forfour years. He graduated from Needles High School in 1988, andattended Mesa Jr. College.

Mr. Raine was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Raine andstep-father Matthew Carpenter. He is survived by his mother,Adeline Carpenter, sisters Katherine Shoukeh and Erika Carpenter;godson Tarik Shoukeh; grandmother Henrietta Teran, all of SanDiego; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A vigil service is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, withvisitation and rosary from 4 to 7 p.m. and funeral service isscheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Our Mother ofConfidence Catholic Church in San Diego. A vigil service isscheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, with visitation and rosaryfrom 5 to 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church inIndio. Interment will be Friday, Feb. 16, at the Coachella ValleyCemetery in Coachella.

ESCONDIDO — Jack Jay Tee, 73, diedFriday, Feb. 9, 2001, at his home.

Born Oct. 6, 1927, in Michigan, he lived in Escondido for threeyears, and was formerly of Penasquitos. He was a retired engineerfrom Humphrey, Inc. He was a member of Escondido County Club andElks Lodge.

Mr. Tee is survived by his wife of 40 years, Eva Tee of Escondido;son Daniel Michael McCullough of Phoenix; daughter KathleenElizabeth Parker of San Marcos; and brothers and sisters-in-lawRichard and Hazel Tee of North Carolina and Donald and Sandy Tee ofFlorida.

A private family memorial is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 18, at hishome.

LAKE SAN MARCOS — Ernest John Skaff, 96,died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at a local convalescent home.

Born May 1, 1904, in Lacrosse, Wis., he lived in Lake San Marcosfor 36 years. He was a manufacturer’s representative for A.G. MayerCompany where he sold religious good for 20 years. He was a memberof the United Church of Lake San Marcos.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Valura Skaff, in 1996. He issurvived by sons Phillip Skaff of Carlsbad and Robert Skaff ofParma, Ohio; sisters Mildred Skaff of Santa Fe, N.M., and MargaretKitchen of Fort Belvoir, Va.; and granddaughter Susan Karlsson ofVista.

A private cremation with scattering at sea is planned.

OCEANSIDE — Jack C. Dunlap, 85, diedFriday, Feb. 9, 2001.

Born Aug. 29, 1916, in Plainview, Texas, he lived in Oceanside for13 years. He was a retired accountant from Oakmont Country Club andan avid ballroom dancing enthusiast.

Mr. Dunlap was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Dunlap, in1999.

POWAY — Maxine E. Matz, 77, died Friday,Feb. 9, 2001, at her home of cancer.

Born June 6, 1923, in Newark, Ohio, she lived in Poway for 41years. She was a floral designer. In 160, she and her husband movedto Poway and opened the Poway Lumber and Hardware Store. She was anaccomplished water color artist and a member of the North CountySociety of Fine Arts.

Mrs. Matz, is survived by her husband of 56 years, Rudy W. Matz, ofPoway; sons and daughter-in-law Rudy Matz Jr. and Eric and RobinMatz, all of Poway; daughters and son-in-law Lindsey Matz of Powayand Carolyn and Tom Robertson of Vista; brother and sister-in-lawDave and Gerry Wilson of Newark, Ohio; sisters and brother-in-lawBarb and Floyd Beckman and Virginia Weiss, all of Newark;grandchildren Eve, Adam, Brittney, Ashley, Kaeley and Carley Matz,Christopher and Brian Robertson and great-grandchild ChanceMatz.

Born May 5, 1935, in El Paso, Texas, he lived in Vista for 33years. He was employed as a warehouseman for Johnson’s Moving andStorage.

Mr. Sanchez was preceded in death by his son, Augustine SanchezJr., April 13, 1997. Born Nov. 21, 1922, in Selma, he lived in Cassel for 16 years. Hewas formerly from Vista. He was a truck driver for Conrock for 30years. He was past president and coach of Vista Little League for25 years. He was a member of Hat Creek Baptist Church, and servedin the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Brightwell is survived by his wife, Jean Brightwell of Cassel,sons Robert C. Lexington of Kentucky, Stephen D. Brightwell ofOroville and Jeffery B. Brightwell of Clovis; daughter ValerieHarvey of Redding; sisters Beatrice Henderson of Corvallis, Ore.Golden Semas of Kingsburg and Neva Williams of Dinuba; ninegrandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Beltran is survived by her brother Joe M. Beltran of Oxnard;sister Carmen Espinosa and sister-in-law Mary Beltran, both ofEscondido; six nieces and six nephews.

Visitation is scheduled for 6 p.m. with rosary recited at 7 p.m.today, Feb. 13, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. A Mass will berecited at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at St. Mary’s CatholicChurch, with the Rev. Peter Navarro officiating, with interment at2:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Born Jan. 1, 1915, in Salt Lake City, she lived in Oceanside for 43years. She was a retired school teacher from St. Mary Star of theSea School. She was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea CatholicChurch.

Mrs. Buelow is survived by her son, Clifford Buelow Jr., of SanBruno; daughter Mary K. Buelow of Oceanside; three grandchildrenand one great-grandchild.

Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. with rosary recited at 7 p.m.today, Feb. 13, at Oceanside Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Michaelof St. Mary of the Star of the Sea officiating. RAMONA — Doris Marie Hurrle, 88, diedSunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Villa Del Rey Assisted Care Home inEscondido.

Born Feb. 3, 1913, in Wauwatosa, Wis., she lived in Ramona for fouryears. She moved to San Diego as a young lady and was a nurse forseveral years at County Hospital in the 1940s.

Mrs. Hurrle was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Hurrle onFeb. 3, 1999, and grandson Roger Hersey on Dec. 5, 1987. She issurvived by son and daughter-in-law Gordon R. and Marilynn Herseyof Ramona; grandsons Jeffrey Hersey of Houston and Richard Herseyof Aliso Viejo and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb.15, at Ramona Nuevo Memory Gardens next to her husband. A memorialservice is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Villa Del ReyChapel, in Escondido.

Hewas 1979 outstanding citizen of the year in Oceanside; past exaltedruler of Oceanside Elks Lodge; past president of San Luis ReyShrine; past president of Oceanside Chamber of Commerce; pastpresident of North County Armed Services past president of GreaterSan Luis Rey Council, member of Oceanside Masonic Lodge, El MilicaShrine in Long Beach. He was chairman of United Way, committee ofMira Costa Bond Drive; America Cancer Association, board of trusteeof Oceanside Elks, Oceanside Tourism and Recreation Committee,Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Parade Committee; and served on theboard of United Community Service, Oceanside Boy’s Club, OceansideHumane Society, Oceanside Senior Citizen’s Board and was a memberof Oceanside Elks Lodge 1561 BPOE and Oceanside Masonic Lodge 381F&AM. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mr. Coon is survived by his wife, Elouise Coon of Oceanside;daughter and son-in-law Donna and James Culpepper of Norco;grandchildren Steven Bolnton of Corona, Robert Bolnton of Norco andMatthew Culpepper of Norco; and niece Santa Colgan of Folsum.

Ms. Terrano was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley G.Terrano, in 1975. She is survived by sons Phillip Terrano ofChicago and Thomas Terrano of New York; daughters and son-in-lawDorothy and Gregory Salazar of Oceanside and Donna Marie Terrano ofGardena; brother Frank Cascia of New York; sisters Christine LaGresta of Seal Beach and Anna Lanceri of Florida and grandchildrenJames Philip Monahan and Thomas Patrick Monahan both of NewYork.

MURRIETA — William Keith Barber, 71,died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at D.V.A. Medical Center Loma Linda,of pancreatic cancer.

Born June 25, 1929, in Montebello, he lived in Murrieta for 13years. He worked for 33 years at Headerman for Olympic FasteningSystems and enjoyed fishing, gardening, coin collecting, andcoaching Little League in Fullerton. He served in the U.S.Army.

Mr. Barber is survived by his wife, Betty Barber, of Murrieta; sonsand daughter-in-law Jack and Beverlee Barber of Temecula, StevenBarber of Murrieta; daughter Lori Barber of Murrieta; sister LoreneBarber of Hemet; brother and sister-in-law Dean and Roberta Barberof Victorville; grandsons Jason and Kyle Barber of Temecula andgranddaughter Kelsey Barber of Temecula.

Mrs. Wade is survived by her husband of 34 years, Don Wade, ofTemecula; mother Marie Waldo of Temecula; sons Mitchell Wade of LosAngeles, Christopher Wade of San Francisco and David Wade ofShirley, Ark.; daughters Peri Walton of Oceanside and WendyPettersen of Columbia, Mo.; sisters Ethlene Owen of Orange and SaraSpratford of Escondido; and six grandchildren.

Robinson Thomas, 77

ESCONDIDO — Robinson B. Thomas, 77, diedSaturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at a local hospital.

Born March 28, 1923, in Pocatello, Idaho, he lived in Escondido for21 years. He was a self-employed general contractor for more than50 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, as aparatrooper with the 101st Airborne Division and fought in theBattle of the Bulge and in the European-African campaign. He was alifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was one of theoriginal general contractors in the area and was dedicated to hiswork.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty E. Thomas ofEscondido; sons and daughters-in-law Robin E. and Marianne Thomasof Long Beach and Reid G. and Cathy Thomas of Escondido;grandchildren Lisa M. Thomas of Escondido, Kurt D. Thomas of LongBeach, Lee D. and Glenda Thomas of Fountain Valley, Sean P. andLorraine Thomas of Littleton, Colo., and Wayne R. Thomas ofAlbuquerque, N.M., and great-grandchildren Andrew, Kyle and TiffanyThomas of Murrieta, Katie and Joshua Thomas of Littleton, Colo.,and Alex Thomas of Phoenix.

Mark S. Dovel Sr., 42

SUN CITY — Mark S. Dovel Sr., 42, diedSaturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at his parents’ home in Sun City after along battle with cancer.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, he lived in Crest. He was a writer. Hegraduated from Poway High School, and was a member of the PowaySheriff’s Explorer program as a lieutenant. He formed themodel-railroad club in Poway Village and was enrolled in the Climbprogram at Shadow Mountain Community Church with 16 months to go toearn a business management degree. He was an aircraft electricalsystem specialist from 1976 to 1982, He was in the U.S. Navy, anaircraft electronics and electrical system specialist 1982 to 1985.He was in the U.S. Air Force, 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing,Beale Air Force working on the SR-71 (Blackbird). Federal specialagent from 1985 to 1990, participated in protective serviceoperations to include protection of former President Ronald Reagan.Assigned to a joint federal task force for two years and amerchandise recovery manager for STOR Furnishings International inTorrance. He produced several written papers.

Mr. Dovel is survived by his parents, Ray and Carol Dovel of SunCity; brother Matthew Dovel of Las Vegas, son Mark Dovel Jr., ofMission Beach; daughter Holly Dovel of Rancho Bernardo and nieceBrittanie Dovel of Anchorage, Alaska.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at ShadowMountain Community Church in El Cajon.
