What is the main point of Matthew 14? ›

In Matthew 14, Jesus' exercise of divine power is set in contrast with the corrupt, violent, and fear-inducing power of Herod Antipas. Jesus' power not only surpasses that of Herod; it is, more importantly, a different kind of power with different outcomes.

Jesus explains to the disciples that accidentally eating a speck of unclean food can't defile a person. People are defiled by their own sinfulness, which they express when they speak—or, when they purposefully eat that which God has forbidden.

Matthew 14:16 In-Context

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

Jesus, though, steps in and insists on allowing the little children to come to Him. He tells the disciples not to hinder them because the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are like children. It is a tender picture, and Jesus clearly cares for the children.

But while Peter was walking on the water, he saw the wind and the waves. He was afraid and began sinking into the water. He shouted, “Lord, save me!” Then Jesus caught Peter with his hand.

But the only reference to Jesus' reaction to John's death comes from a short, poignant passage in Matthew 14:13: Now when Jesus heard [about John's death], he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself.

Thus the first grouping could be the initial waxing to David, the next fourteen the waning to the Babylonian captivity and the last period the waxing towards Jesus. The number 14 is itself important. It is twice 7, which was considered a holy number. David's name, when turned into numbers, adds up to fourteen.

Matthew's Gospel was written to show that Jesus isn't just another prophet or king. He's the ultimate prophet-priest-king that the people had been waiting for. Jesus fulfilled everything that Moses foreshadowed, and he is the King who was promised to rescue Israel.

Taken by itself, Matt. 7:6 is a weird thing to say: “Don't give holy things to dogs, don't throw your pearls to pigs, lest they trample them under their feet and, turning, tear you to pieces” (author's translation).

The Bible. The only breed of dog mentioned by name in the Bible is the greyhound (Proverbs 30:29-31, King James Version): "There be three things which do well, yea, Which are comely in going; A lion, which is strongest among beasts and Turneth not away from any; A greyhound; A he-goat also."

But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man `unclean. ' For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what make a man `unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him `unclean.

Jesus has told his closest disciples to do an impossible thing: give the crowds of people gathered in this desolate place something to eat. This is not merely a large gathering; the total number of men, women, and children in this space might have been as many as 15–20,000 (Matthew 14:21).

Context Summary

They are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. These metaphors represent the impact Christians are meant to have in the world. That's why it matters so much that they do the good works God gives them to do. Otherwise, they will stop being useful as salt and light.

Matthew 18:4 In-Context

3 and said, "I assure you that unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of heaven. 4 The greatest in the Kingdom of heaven is the one who humbles himself and becomes like this child.

In other words, entrance into heaven's kingdom cannot be gained by defeating all opponents or demonstrating personal accomplishment. Those who would enter must make themselves humble by recognizing that, like little children, they are powerless over the circ*mstances of their own lives.

Og's destruction is told in Psalms 135:11 and 136:20 as one of many great victories for the nation of Israel, and the Book of Amos 2:9 may refer to Og as "the Amorite" whose height was like the height of the cedars and whose strength was like that of the oaks.

Like Peter, we are always walking on water, putting our trust in Jesus Christ. We trust in him for protection in the most frightening times of life, like at the hour of death. At times we can do nothing for those we love except place them in the hand of God, knowing that God loves them more than we do.

Whatever your circ*mstance, remember what Jesus said, “It is I; do not be afraid.” If Jesus can walk on water in the midst of a storm, he can walk with you in the midst of your overwhelming problems. This doesn't mean that Jesus will always change your circ*mstances.

Sea of Galilee

It was the setting for several of Jesus' miracles, including calming the storm and walking on water. It was from its settlements that Jesus took his apostles.

In this verse it appears that Jesus withdrew to escape from Herod because "his hour had not yet come". In this he gives an example of his own words, "when they persecute you in this city, flee to another" (Matthew 10:23). Another possible reason is that he retired in order to give his disciples a chance to rest.

Matthew wrote his account of Jesus's ministry to show that Jesus was and is indeed the King, Israel's long-awaited Messiah. He reflected this concern in his opening line, “The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham” (Matthew 1:1).

Writing for a Jewish Christian audience, Matthew's main concern is to present Jesus as a teacher even greater than Moses.

This story prods us to get up out of our comfortable chairs and throw ourselves into offering our resources on behalf of a needy world. It calls us to remember and to anticipate, to stand in the story, looking back and looking forward to instances of divine nourishment.

Jesus Christ walked on water and invited Peter to do so as well. As Peter saw the storm and waves, he began to sink and cried out to the Savior for help. This lesson can help you follow Peter's example of turning to the Savior during fearful or overwhelming situations.
