Harmon steps down at Battle

Tom Harmon has stepped down following two seasons as the head softball coach at John Battle High School.

He went 25-25-1 with two Region 2D runner-up finishes and a pair of state tournament berths to his credit. This past season the squad won the Mountain 7 District regular-season title, finished as runner-up to Wise County Central in the regional tourney and lost to Appomattox in the VHSL Class 2 state quarterfinals.

Harmon had been an assistant coach for seven seasons prior to taking over at the helm.

“The girls have helped me to make memories that will always be dear to me,” Harmon said. “It is going to be hard to let it go but I think it is time for me to give it up and let someone else try to take this group of girls further than I have. A different coach with a different style of coaching may just be able to do that. I’ll still be around supporting them and will always love them and John Battle softball.”

The public is invited to attend Day 1 of the proceedings in Room 400 at Abingdon High School at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will be allowed to ask questions, provide input, or share any concerns they might want to share with the VHSL staff.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

SoCon, Atlantic Sun begin scheduling allianceThe ETSU men’s basketball team will play a pair of Atlantic Sun teams this upcoming 2024-25 season, as the Southern Conference and ASUN announced a two-year scheduling alliance on Thursday. Each SoCon team will play two games against ASUN opponents through this alliance with games taking place in early November and December.

The Bucs will host Eastern Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 8, while ETSU travels to Jacksonville on Saturday, Dec. 14.

This agreement comes in response to the emphasis placed on NET rankings for postseason prospects and an ever-changing landscape in college athletics which, for many, has made it difficult to fill a 30-game schedule with quality opponents, according to a press release.
