Animation has been viewed as a laggard in Hollywood's recovery from COVID. Two recent movie releases show that isn't the case anymore. Last weekend, Sony's "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" (SONY) secured a $120.65 million domestic debut, according to the studio, beating conservative estimates of $80 million. It was the best opening ever for Sony Pictures Animation and the third-biggest opening weekend for any Spider-Man film. The film’s gross marks the second biggest opening of 2023 thus far, narrowly surpassing Disney's (DIS) "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3," to land behind another animated title — Universal's "Super Mario Bros. Movie" (CMCSA.) The films add to the firepower of Universal and Sony at the US box office, which is dominated by Disney. "These were huge franchises and characters that people love, but maybe underpinning that even more is the fact that there has been this pent-up demand," Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Box Office Pro, told Yahoo Finance. "The last couple of years, even though movies have been coming back, the straggler out of all of the content was animation and family-friendly content. A big part of that is because those films take so long to produce and were naturally going to be the most impacted from all of the COVID delays." Having pitched many projects and heard countless excuses for why a movie shouldn't be made, I cannot stress enough the incredible courage, vision, and bravery demonstrated by Sony Animation... #TheSpiderverseIn an industry where it's often easier for executives to default to a safe "no, thanks, we're looking for projects like _______" rather than a bold "yes, let's do it!," the decision to embark on such a unique film was a testament to their daring spirit.Greenlighting Spider-Verse represented a significant risk for the studio, especially considering the unprecedented visual style of the animated feature. Iterations of Animatics, staying the course, the execs and filmmakers having each other's backs.All parties involved in this venture deserve applause for their unwavering commitment to innovation. I want to see more executives and studios following Sony's example and standing firmly by filmmakers, fostering a culture of support for daring and original projects. #Animation

The beauty of slow frame rate! If we think that slow cuts and even slower frame rates are a passe, think again. It's probably Animation 101, but not often do we see experiments with this method, not in newer media at least. It's delightful to watch as the scene builds, delivering something new with each frame...what a process! Something so simple and elegant that most new animators need to be reminded of.
