Girls and Boys Track & Field State Finals Preview (2024)

The Girls and Boys Track and Field teams will be well represented in Friday and Saturday’s IHSAA State Finals at the Robert C Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington. The Girls State Finals are Friday, May 31 while the Boys State Finals are Saturday June 1. Live Results will be available at live.timingmd.net and on the Girls and Boys Track and Field page on IHSAA.org.

Here is a look at the Grizzly Cubs competing in each event.

Girls Meet Preview: Friday, May 31

Girls 100 Hurdles: Trials at 5:15, Finals at 6:15

Aubrey Runyon gets a busy day started for the Lady Cubs in the 100 Hurdles. Runyon will be just the second girl in program history to compete in four events at the State Finals. The first was Erica Long in 1997. In 2023 Runyon earned her way onto the podium with an 8th place finish in the 100 hurdles. Earlier this year, she was 3rd in the IATCCC Indoor Big School Hoosier State Relays 60 Hurdles final in March. This week, Runyon enters as the 5th seed and hopes to improve on her 2023 finish.

4×100 Relay: 6:45

The team of Aubrey Runyon, Addie Martin, Hanna Stewart, and Sami Frazier tied the school record earlier this season. This Friday the team hopes to break that previous mark at the IHSAA State Finals. The team enters as the 22 seed in the 27 team Field, but a new school record mark could move them up solidly into the middle of the pack. The co-holders of the school record finished 17th at the State Finals in 2018.

400 Dash: 7:05

Senior Lauren Klem takes to the track in the 400 Meter Dash as the 24 seed. Klem is just the second girl in program history to qualify for the State Finals in all 4 years. She qualified for the 1600 in 2021 and 2023 and she was a member of the 4×400 Relay team in 2022. This year the current school record holder will take one more shot at lowering her current record of 58.92. A new school record mark could move her up inside the top 20 in the final results.

300 Hurdles: 7:20

Aubrey Runyon is back on the track for her 3rd event of the evening in the 300 hurdle final. In 2023 Runyon was on pace to medal in the event, but a clipped final hurdle derailed her hopes. This year she’ll be in a nearly identical position in the second heat of the event with a shot at redemption. She enters as the 14th seed, but her 2024 season best time would put her in position for a top five finish.

4×400 Relay: 8:30

In the final heat of the final race of the evening the 4×400 Relay team of Aubrey Runyon, Ainsley Botkin, Hanna Stewart, and Lauren Klem will look to become the first team in school history to medal in the event. Franklin girls relays have only earned 1 medal in a relay in program history (9th place in the 4×100 in 1997). They enter Friday as the 6th seed after setting a new school record at last Tuesday’s Regional.

Boys Meet Preview: Saturday, June 1

Boys Pole Vault: 3:00

Senior Carson Sommers starts off the second day of competition for the Grizzly Cubs in the pole vault. Sommers set a new school record of 14’6″ at last week’s Greenfield-Central Regional in a runner-up effort. That height brings him in tied for the 8th seed so a spot on the medal podium could come down to getting through the early heights of the competition without misses. Sommers finished runner-up in the pole vault at the IATCCC Indoor Big School Hoosier State Relays in March.

Boys 110 Dash: Trials 5:00, Finals 6:25

Track newcomer Alex Leugers qualified for the State Finals by running faster than the state auto-qualifying time in the Greenfield-Central Regional final. His time of 10.93 was good enough for 4th place and earned him a spot in this weekend’s field. He will enter as the 18th seed. If he can better his time from last week he should be able to move up from that seed and possibly contend for a spot in the final.

Boys 110 High Hurdles: Trials 5:15, Finals 6:15

Senior JD Sever runs in the first of his two events on Saturday when he takes the track for the 110 high Hurdles. Sever qualified for the state Finals with a third place finish at last week’s Greenfield-Central Regional. He set a new lifetime best mark in the trials and was just off that mark in the finals despite clipping a few hurdles down the stretch. A clean effort could move Sever up from his 21st seed and possibly into position for a top 9 finish.

Boys 300 Hurdles: 7:20

JD Sever hits the track for the second time in the 300 hurdle final. In 2023, JD ran his best race of the season and grabbed the 9th and final podium spot to earn All-State honors. This year he enters as the 3rd seed and will have a great opportunity to go toe to toe with the state’s best in a battle for the top step of the podium. A top 5 finish would be the program’s first since Johntel Smith in the 110 Hurdles in 2009.
