Delighted to be a part of this study on the "Current State in Developing Lean Six Sigma training and certification programs -an Irish perspective" that was published in the conference proceedings of the European Lean Educators conference. Thank you to Michelle Regan and my coauthors for their involvement in the study. We found that much of LSS training and certification is outsourced in Irish organisations with externally accredited university and training certifications in LSS being valued more by companies. Many organisations also differ on whether a LSS project completion is required or not to obtain a LSS certification. The study was insightful in understanding how LSS training and certifications is integrated into modern Irish organisations. University of Galway#universityofgalway

It's great to see innovative Lean work in the Irish Medtech industry get recognised. Congrats to University of Limerick industry based student/graduate Danny O Donoghue for getting his paper on "Implementing an Order Pull System into a Medical Device Company Using Define for Lean Six Sigma Methodology" published in the European Lean Educators Conference Proceedings . Thanks to my coauthors also Anna Trubetskaya of the University of Limerick, Manjeet Kharub, and Kathryn Cormican of the University of Galway. #universityofgalwayThis project aimed to show how implementing continuous flow pullproduction with just-in-time Kanban processes in a Medical Device companycan improve customer supply and thus mitigate device shortages in the Medtech supply chain. A case study in a medical device manufacturer utilised Define for Lean Six Sigma methodology for the design of a pull process and identification of waste in the process by using Value Stream Mapping and Kaizen events. A Pull model utilising Kanban and Hejunka was designed and implemented to produce products based only on customer demand signals. The device aged work orders in the process and waste reduced and overall service to the customer was improved while ensuring products were produced based on customer demand signals resulting in lead time and inventory reduction of over 60%, increased inventory turns, elimination of waste due to overproduction, holding inventory, and increased collaboration and communication between stakeholders. This is one of the few studies on implementing a Lean pull model in a medical device manufacturer and can be leveraged to improve supply chain accuracy and reliability. This study can demonstrate how supply chain shortages in devices that may affect patient treatments can be mitigated by embracing Lean methods.
