Responsabilità individuale e responsabilità civile. Il disarmo nella riflessione di Kathleen Lonsdale

The essay examines Kathleen Lonsdale's reflection on disarmament. A scientist and non-violent pacifist, she has devoted considerable space to the question of the civil responsibility of scientists and the role they should play in keeping the public informed about the results of their research. In particular, I analyzed Lonsdale's considerations on the nuclear danger and its repercussions on collective security, to which Kathleen had devoted herself in the 1954 essay Security and Responsibility. Never proposed in Italian, I edited the translation of Security and Responsibility, available at: https://www.unive.it/pag/fileadmin/user_upload/dipartimenti/DSLCC/documenti/DEP/numeri/n45/10_Lonsdale.pdf

La Wilpf. Cento anni di impegno per la pace e i diritti delle donne

Maria Grazia Suriano

This paper aims to illustrate the feminist pacifist experience of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, which stands out from others for longevity and originality. In April 2015, the WILPF will celebrate its centenary as its origins lie in the First World War. It is a non-governmental organization, of which two of its international presidents, Jane Addams and Emily Balch, were awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1931 and in 1946, respectively. An original characteristic of this organization is its emphasis on investigating the status of women in society, going to show that violence against women is the root of the militaristic culture, and pointing out that a serious reflection on the causes of such gender-based violence and their removal is the seed for the banning of all wars.

Pacifismo femminile nell'Italia repubblicana. Un percorso storiografico

2021 •

Matteo Ermacora

The historiographical review focuses on women's pacifism in Italy after World War Two. The issue has been little investigated by Italian historiography, and only in recent times has it received growing attention. Studies have focused in particular on women's pacifist associations during the Cold War, while research on the women's pacifist mobilization during 1980s and 1990s has not developed. Historiography has highlighted how in the 1970s the feminist movement questioned the relationship woman-motherhood-peace and proposed pacifism as a conscious political choice based upon nonviolence and women's liberation.

Donne, pace, non-violenza fra le due guerre mondiali: la Women's International League for Peace and Freedom e l'impegno per il disarmo e l'educazione

Maria Grazia Suriano

The essay is my doctoral dissertation discussed in 2007. Dedicated to the history of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom between 1915 and 1939, the research examines the ways in which the Wilpf addressed the issue of disarmament, both in the context of foreign policy to redefine international relations on the basis of an action of continuous mediation, and on the pedagogical level to spread a culture of cooperation and peaceful coexistence. A part of the thesis has been published in the book entitled Percorrere la nonviolenza (2012).

The gender dimension of climate change is an issue of considerable interest and urgency. However, in the Italian debate it has not yet received the attention it deserves. This paper aims at providing a general overview of the relationship between climate change and gender. We identify major variables determining a greater vulnerability for women during adverse environmental circ*mstances, and introduce main approaches elaborated at the international level to enhance coping and adaptation capacities. In the concluding section, some of the limits and controversial theoretical and practical approaches characterizing the field are discussed.
